Major Tour Car repairs and rewiring.

The time had come for some major repairs and rewiring!

First, remove my tour-car furniture as they also need some cleaning and polishing.

Stripping started to remove old wiring looms.
I'm thinking to fit one of those small pan air-filters on the carb.

Still stripping...
BLACK WIDOW SPIDER...
I'm going to use Doom as I carry on stripping! This is a scary spider that lived in my car... I regularly "Doom" the inside of my car... This one was living in the hidden compartment between the engine and firewall section.

Removing the old loom... marking all the plugs.

The next phase... to remove the heater box to repair water leaks...

The "heater box" became a interior fan box. I removed the heater part as it was all clogged up and nasty. The spider nest inside removed and cleaned up. All the air channels to the screen, cabin and floor is sorted and cleaned. Where the heater radiator came out, I had to close and seal that section.

Remember, we live in sunny South Africa and a heater isn't necessary and cause colds and flue anyway! Secondly the heaters causes water flow problems on the engine cooling system and with most old cars... with over heating problems, the heaters are bypassed.

The fan box fitted back into my car and all water leaks repaired.
The next phase is real important. The factory made harness is removed from the car as shown above. At each end of the harness is plugs... like a lot of plugs! They must go back on the car with the new wiring.

The harness is carefully opened to the junction box... or fuse box that holds the fuses , relays and components like the flicker unit. From the instrument cluster most of the original wiring will go back to the car!

Although the auto electricians call this a "cut out"... its not.
At this point each component plug or plugs are split. To name one... The plug from the brake light switch to the junction box. The the plugs from the column switches to the junction box.... and so on.
The dreaded part is where people messed around with wiring! That was the cause of the problems in the first place!

Once I had split the harness, each point at the new junction box is marked. There will be new looms from the rear of the car and front lights to the junction box. Each of the individual lights are marked on the wiring.

To run ahead a bit... the new junction box and engine wiring I leave to the qualified auto electrician. Basically anyone can do the time consuming work.

The following photo show the interior harness and all points traced.
The next photo show the engine compartment harness.
The coil, module and ignition system identified. That was my biggest problem on the car!

The new coil in place and the new position for the distributor module.
New harness on the rear end almost done!
Rear lights bulb holders and dividers repaired.

New front end harness... ready to go into car!
Another problem get attention ... Engine coolant leaks...

Some progress...

The carb is all cleaned.... Pre-fitting of the new air-cleaner soon...
Some little repairs that no-one would almost notice... The one head light was old and the other new. One could have easily see the difference previously. I cleaned the old head light inside!
Under the front bumper was like a inch wide spoiler that was broken on the ends. I cut that section off  and it looks much better.

I still have a welsh plug dilemma... meaning the repairs is on hold now as the next step is the ignition system, starter and alternator and we need to be able to start the car.

To be continued....
